I almost responded to this earlier, but I also wasn't sure I understood the question.
However, it seems to me that most people tend to confuse themselves in the beginning (and the beginning can last for years, and years).
If stalking is making you "more" self-important, then it seems obvious to me that you're just confusing things. As a stalker, self-importance is one of the things you are stalking. You are stalking yourself in order to remove self-importance.
If you feel that your activities are making you more self important, then it just goes to show that you probably haven't trapped your prey just yet. But the fact that you are aware of what is going on, means you may be on the right path.
